Questioning Faith

Compassionate, trauma-informed counseling for spiritual struggle, faith questions, and religious trauma.

Woman outside celebrating life with her hands and arms wide open.

Are you questioning your faith or struggling to feel connected to God?

For many people, faith has always been a source of strength — until it starts to feel confusing or painful. You might be asking questions you never thought you’d ask, wondering where God is in your suffering, or struggling with guilt, anger, or shame about what you believe.

Maybe you’ve experienced spiritual abuse or been hurt by a church or religious leader. Maybe your faith no longer feels like it fits who you are. Or maybe you’re trying to rebuild a relationship with God after trauma and don’t know where to start.

Spiritual confusion can feel deeply isolating, especially when the people around you don’t understand what you’re going through. You might find yourself wondering: Can I question and still believe? Is God disappointed in me? Is it okay to heal differently than how I was taught?

You’re not alone. Spiritual struggle is part of being human and healing your faith can be just as sacred as having faith itself.

You’re questioning what you’ve always believed.

When faith no longer feels clear, it can shake the foundation of who you are. Maybe you grew up with certain beliefs or expectations that don’t fit anymore. You might feel pulled between who you were taught to be and who you’re becoming. It’s confusing when something that once brought comfort now brings guilt or fear. You may even feel angry at God, uncertain about prayer, or disconnected from the spiritual practices that once felt meaningful.

You’ve been hurt by religion or spiritual communities.

Spiritual abuse, manipulation, or judgment can leave lasting wounds. You might have been taught to silence your feelings, submit your boundaries, or ignore your pain “in the name of faith.” This can create deep confusion and mistrust — both toward God and others. Healing from spiritual trauma means reclaiming your voice, your worth, and your right to define your relationship with God in a way that feels authentic and safe.

You want to reconnect with your spirituality, but differently this time.

Many clients come to therapy wanting to heal spiritually but not sure how. You might crave closeness with God again but feel unsure where to start. You may want to integrate your faith with your healing journey without feeling pressured to believe a certain way. Therapy can help you explore what faith, hope, and purpose mean to you — not just what you’ve been told they should mean.

It’s okay to ask questions. It’s okay to doubt. And it’s okay to rebuild your faith in a way that feels genuine, safe, and rooted in love.

How Therapy Works

At Purpose Counseling, we create a space where faith and therapy can coexist — whether you’re deconstructing, rebuilding, or simply exploring what spirituality means to you.

Here’s what you can expect:

  1. We start with your story. We explore what faith has meant to you, the experiences that shaped your beliefs, and how those experiences impact your emotions, relationships, and sense of self today.

  2. We focus on safety and self-compassion. Using trauma-informed care and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), we help you process spiritual pain, set boundaries, and learn to trust your inner voice again.

  3. We integrate faith as you define it. For some clients, that includes prayer or scripture; for others, it’s about mindfulness, purpose, or reconnecting with peace. You decide how much spirituality you want to bring into sessions.

We build tools for emotional and spiritual regulation. Drawing from DBT, you’ll learn practical skills for calming the body, reducing guilt and anxiety, and responding instead of reacting when spiritual triggers arise.

Why Work With Us

We understand that spirituality can be both healing and complex — especially when trauma or loss has been part of your story.

  • Trauma-informed faith integration: Our therapists are trained to approach faith conversations gently and respectfully, understanding how spiritual wounds can affect the nervous system, emotions, and relationships.

  • Choice and empowerment: We never impose beliefs or doctrines. You set the pace and define what spirituality means for you.

  • Experience with religious trauma: Our team has supported clients navigating spiritual abuse, deconstruction, and rebuilding faith after betrayal or loss.

  • A holistic approach: We integrate mind, body, and spirit — helping you connect your emotional healing to your faith journey, not separate it.

At Purpose Counseling, we believe faith can be a place of healing again, not pressure or pain.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I have to be Christian to work with you?
No. We welcome clients from all faith backgrounds and those who don’t identify with any faith. While Purpose Counseling is a Christian practice, our goal is to meet you where you are, not to convert or convince.

2. What if I’ve been hurt by the church or by Christians?
That’s a valid and painful experience — and one we take seriously. Many of our clients are healing from religious or spiritual trauma. We create a space where you can safely process that pain without judgment or shame.

3. Can we pray or include scripture in sessions?
Yes, if you want to. Some clients find comfort in integrating prayer or scripture, while others prefer a more reflective approach. You decide how faith shows up in your sessions.

4. What if I’m questioning my beliefs or unsure what I believe at all?
That’s okay. Therapy is a place to explore your doubts and feelings safely. We’ll help you unpack your experiences, identify what feels true to you, and begin to rebuild a sense of trust and connection — with yourself, with others, and possibly with God.
